The Big 6 --- Preparing for a New Year of New Laws
|
Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to the law. Ignorance of employment laws can lead to costly litigation and headaches for any business. Avoid these headaches by being informed about the new Oregon laws that affect you and your employees. Make the resolution to be prepared for the New Year.
We will cover:
• HB 3162 - This bill expands Oregon’s whistleblower protection to private employees who in good faith report information that the employees believe is evidence of a violation of a state or federal law, rule or regulation, subject to certain other requirements. The former law only provided protection for specific types of alleged violations by employers.
• HB 2377- Under existing law, drivers under age 18 are prohibited from using mobile communication devices while driving. HB2377 eliminates the age restriction and applies the prohibition against using mobile communication devices to all drivers, with limited exceptions.
• SB786 - Requires employer to provide reasonable accommodation to religious observance or practices of employee unless providing accommodation would impose undue hardship on employer.
• SB874 - Updates and clarifies discrimination laws related to individuals who have disabilities, and brings Oregon Disability Discrimination laws in line with the ADA Amendments Act of 2008.
• SB519 - Prohibits employer from taking adverse employment action against employee who declines to attend meeting or participate in communication concerning employer's opinion about religious or political matters.
• HB2744/3256 - Requires employer that employs 25 or more persons in Oregon for each working day during specified periods of time to provide leave to certain employees who are spouses of members of military forces that are on active duty during periods of military conflict. (HB2744) Establishes as unlawful employment practice certain actions by employer related to service performed by person in uniformed services (HB 3256.)
