The Closely Held Business Team is proud to announce the addition of Eric A. Smith and John G. O’Neil.

Smith, an attorney with 6 years of experience serving closely held businesses, joins the firm as an associate and will focus on business and commercial law, specifically for closely held businesses. O’Neil also joins the firm as an associate and will focus on intellectual property law.

Eric Smith received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Oregon in 1991 and 1998, respectively. Prior to joining Dunn Carney, Eric worked for the Portland law firm of Schwabe Williamson & Wyatt for six years. His practice is primarily focused on facilitating business and commercial transactions for closely-held businesses, including formation, operational matters, and ownership/asset transfers. Eric also has considerable experience advising companies in the local maritime industry on both transactional and litigation-related legal issues. Eric’s broad-based experience has uniquely prepared him to advise closely-held business clients on a variety of legal needs. Eric is licensed to practice in Oregon and Washington.

O’Neil received his law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 2001, and practiced law for two years in Palo Alto, California with the New York-based firm of Pennie & Edmonds. He then spent 6 months in Afghanistan supervising and consulting on logistical and security issues in support of UN-sponsored voter registration programs. John returned to the U.S. and moved to Oregon. He worked with David Buono at Buono & Block P.C. (recently merged with Dunn Carney) and has experience in both litigation and closely held business, with an emphasis on intellectual property. John is a member of the California Bar and Oregon Bar.
